Most of us, after a really busy day, tend to go upstairs, shower and fall into bed without letting go of the events of the day and then start another busy day the following morning.

So why not think about changing that routine, and make bedtime a time that is special where we can nourish our well-being?

People that are successful set up their days with night routines. You don’t have to do all the ideas at once, just try one and do it until it becomes part of your routine. The following ideas will help you achieve a deeper nights sleep which helps with your energy levels the next day.

Pick a bedtime - be consistent with what time you go to bed and do this every night including the weekend. Your body will naturally start to wind down after the habit becomes embedded.

Power down - Turn off the tv, internet and phone at least an hour before you go to bed. This gives your body a signal that it’s time to relax. All these devices offer stimulus and logging onto social media, checking emails if you can’t sleep only stimulates your mind more.

Candlelight bath - To really help wind down, get into a hot/warm bubble bath, switch off the electric light and wallow in the suds in candlelight. It makes the experience more cosy and you can add a couple of cups of Epsom salts and some drops of lavender oil to promote a better night’s sleep.

Layer your bed - Make sure your bed is warm and cosy with the right layers. Pillows are important, layers of blankets and lots of pillows create a warm cocoon to snuggle down in. A feather duvet, soft sheets and cable knit throws and blankets add an extra layer of comfort.

Goodnight moon - Make an evening ritual of going outside, wrapped up against the cold and say goodnight to the moon. In this busy world, we forget the most beautiful things in life are free.

Tea - There is nothing better than a good cup of tea. It warms you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Some good teas to help with sleep are camomile, hawthorne, lavender and honey, lemon balm, valerian root, passionflower and magnolia bark tea.

Fairy lights - Fairy lights are not only for Christmas, they give magic all year round. Pop some into your bedroom, turn off harsh lights and lie in the twinkling splendour of your bedroom before drifting off to sleep.

Be grateful - Before you go to sleep at night, write down everything you have been grateful for in a journal. End the day on a positive note, and it starts off the following day on a positive note.

Keep cool - There is nothing worse than trying to get to sleep when the room is too hot. A nice cool room is easier to settle down in so a temperature of between 60-65 is idea.

Get lost in a book - Take a book to read in bed. Settle down for a few pages and immerse yourself in other worlds just for a few moments.

These are just a few suggestions for creating a hygge bedtime routine. Don’t feel pressured into doing everything. As mentioned above, even picking one and doing that every night will be beneficial to you.

Until next time, take care and peaceful wishes.
